Since the start of the week approximately 1,000 of a promised 4,000 US troops have arrived in Poland, representing the largest deployment of US troops in Europe since the end of the cold war. The troops are to be accompanied by 87 tanks, and 144 armored vehicles.
The deployment, which is intended to address concerns of Russian aggression in Eastern Europe, represents the first time US troops have been permanently stationed along Russia’s western border.
The Kremlin views their arrival as a threat to Russia’s national security.
“We perceive it as a threat. These actions threaten our interests, our security. Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It’s [the US], not even a European state” said Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov.
